Words of María de Jesús Patricio Martínez in the Caracol of La Garrucha

Brothers and sisters, the hour of the people has arrived. It is time for us to unite. It is time that together we kick out the fat cat capitalists who have been plundering our lands for years. They’ve divided us, they’ve made us fight among ourselves, they’ve made it clear that if we give them an inch, they’ll take a mile. We must unite. We have a great task before us: to get rid of this capitalist system that is destroying our communities, that is wiping out our peoples. This system is stealing from us what is ours. They are contaminating our waters, they are cutting down all of our trees; that’s why we must unite and together do away with this capitalist system that will destroy not only our communities and our peoples, but all of human life, whether it be in the indigenous communities or in the big cities.

Now is the time, brothers and sisters, to unite, to think together about what we’re going to do, how we are going to build a new Mexico and how we are going to tear down the old Mexico that the people with money have imposed on us. These are selfish people who only think of themselves; they don’t think about our lands, they don’t think about our waters, they don’t think about our trees. That’s why we’ve decided to join together and fight for everyone, for the whole world, not only for the indigenous peoples but for everyone.

So we have no choice but to destroy these fat cat capitalists who are destroying us, but we will only be able to do so if we are organized. We will only be able to do this if we start to think together about how to do it. We will only be able to do this if we join the indigenous peoples with the workers in the countryside and the city. We will have to walk with resolve so that our voice will be heard, that our steps will be seen, that those peoples who for years have been forgotten and downtrodden will rise up and say “We’re not going to let this go on, we want to keep living and we want life for everyone”–that’s why we need to unite these forces and demonstrate to the powerful what we are capable of, and if we are able to unite all the indigenous peoples and the workers of the countryside and the city, of course we will be able to do it. We’re going to make the powerful tremble, those in power who want to take from us what we have.

Let’s try very hard, brothers and sisters, let’s have confidence in those who are by our side, we are not each others’ enemy; we have to join together to be able to free ourselves of this capitalist system.

Long live the indigenous peoples of Mexico and the world!
Long live the workers of the countryside and the city!
Long live the EZLN!
Long live the National Indigenous Congress!
Long live the Indigenous Governing Council!
