To the national and international press and the corporate media:
Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening according to your geography.
I speak these words in the name of all the men and women bases of support of our Northern Zone.
The origin of our self-government lies in the breaking of the agreements signed in San Andrés Larráinzar between the federal government and the Zapatista Army for National Liberation, which represented the originary peoples of our country, Mexico.
We have been carrying out this important task of governing ourselves for the past 14 years. It hasn’t been easy but it has not been impossible, either, to organize, promote, exercise and administrate the resources of our peoples for their benefit. This self-government is overseen by the communities themselves so as not to fall into corruption.
The communities trust their self-government because their representatives come from the same communities. We are named by assemblies according to traditional ways and customs: we do not need any money for campaign advertising.
The Good Government Council is made up of men and women and we perform the tasks that are assigned to us. It doesn’t matter if someone is a woman or a man; what matters is having the will to serve the people in exchange for nothing. That’s how our government is structured at all the three levels: local, municipal, and zone-level authorities.
On our path of struggle, we women have achieved a space of learning because we have the opportunity to participate in self-government. We have a right to name our authorities and be named as authorities, something that did not exist even as an idea 23 years ago. We struggle in order that the thousands and millions of women in the country and the world be taken into account and have the same rights.
As a government, we work collectively. We take into account the principal demands of our peoples under the 7 principles of rule by obeying, without waiting for anyone from outside to come and tell us how to govern our autonomy. We are committed and bound to promote the different areas of work, in particular health, education, and food production.
For example, in the area of health, thanks to our organization we have trained women and men health promoters at all three levels of government who lend their services to the communities in the zone’s central clinic. In this way we have been able to prevent the most common illnesses. This is already a success for us because 23 years ago such services did not exist. Let us be clear that we have not achieved this alone; we thank our honest brother and sister doctors in solidarity, both from Mexico and around the world, who have accompanied our just struggle. Brother and sister originary peoples and workers of the different sectors of Mexico and the world, we invite you to build a new society and a different life, leaving behind the bad system together with its political parties which only trick us, divide us, corrupt us, and make us dependent, because they are part of the same mafia of the neoliberal capitalist system.
They are the principle cause of the murder, disappearance, torture, incarceration, and rape of our people and the pillaging of our natural riches—that is, the total extermination of our peoples. Without consulting the Mexican people they passed structural reforms, in other words, the legal dispossession of our peoples by transnational companies.
Sisters, brothers, peoples of Mexico and the world who are listening to us, we tell you that it is possible to govern ourselves, to create a government where the people command and the government obeys.
We say to you that this is possible, but we must be organized and committed among ourselves as originary peoples together with the different sectors. We cannot wait any longer, we cannot allow these capitalist monsters to continue deciding for us, we cannot continue to allow them to keep ransacking and dispossessing the resources of our country. It is time to join forces and create a struggle with anticapitalist resistance and rebellion.
