On this May Day 2007, El Kilombo Intergaláctico once again raises our voice against the global system of exploitation and subordination called capitalism, which many years ago ceased to respect borders, including all of us in its misery. Today in 2007, like the martyrs of Chicago in 1886, we unite not only with migrants of our own nationalities, and not only with those that have arrived at this (so-called) nation. Today we live in a world in which the wake of capital and its free trade treaties has created immense flows of migration from North Africa to Europe, from rural China to urban China, from Bolivia to Argentina, of Asians to Australia, and of Latin Americans to the United States. We consider all of these people, who live in similar conditions to our own and who fight the same struggle, our compañer@s. (None of this comes as a surprise. It is worth remembering here, as just one example, what hundreds of studies and thousands of voices predicted at the beginning of the 90s, that the changes required by the free trade treaties, especially in the Mexican agricultural sector, would have as their principal effect rural poverty and massive migration.)

Unfortunately we cannot simply echo the Italian anarchists and libertarians who organized the first Mayday in considering ourselves citizens of the world. Today we are rather people in a world without citizens. That is, with or without papers, the nation-states that before we called home are now mere warehouses to store the riches that have all over the world been robbed from those below and to project media simulations in which we are treated as mere spectators invited to vote on who will stay and who will go on American Idol. And although today we demand total amnesty for all of the “undocumented” in the United States, we understand that a solution to what is a truly global situation must go deeper. Citizenship has been converted into a cheap merchandise, that in any case many of us can’t afford to buy.

Given this situation, the problem of the migrant is not who is in government, democrat or republican, conservative or liberal. On the contrary, the problems that migrants face today are how to exercise the power of decision-making when the place previously designated for this exercise (the nation-state) exists mainly as an apparatus of repression? (Take a look at the telling images that came out of Los Angeles this afternoon.) How to delink political action from government when governments govern only for those above? How to organize a society from below and for below? How to be a nation when the only nation possible—today, that is—is the self-determination of all of those below?

If capital and its governing administrations have created an incessant war that has been called the international of terror, we as migrants from below must go further, incessantly creating global networks to erase today’s most significant border: that which divides those who create and are left with nothing from those who live off others and take everything.

Total Amnesty!

Hoy en el día global de los y las trabajador@s, El Kilombo Intergaláctico una vez más alzamos nuestra voz en contra del sistema global de explotación y subordinación llamado capitalismo que hace años dejó de respetar fronteras, incluyéndonos a tod@s en su miseria. Hoy 2007, como los mártires de Chicago de 1886, nos unimos no solo con los migrantes de nuestra nacionalidad, ni tampoco solo con los que llegaron a esta supuesta nación. Vivimos una situación en que los estragos del capital y su libre comercio crea flujos inmensos de migración de África del Norte a Europa, de la China rural a la China urbana, de Bolivia a Argentina, de Asiáticos a Australia, y de Latino American@s a los Estados Unidos, y por eso consideramos que estos otros migrantes también son nuestr@s compañer@s que viven las mismas condiciones y que comparten la misma lucha. (Todo esto no nos cae de sorpresa. Como solo un ejemplo vale recordar aquí lo que predecían cientos de estudios y miles de voces al comienzo de los años ’90, que los cambios requeridos por los tratados de libre comercio, especialmente el sector agrícola de México, tendrían como único efecto la miseria rural y la migración masiva.)

Desafortunadamente hoy no es suficiente hacerles eco a los italianos anarquistas y libertarios que organizaron el primer primero de mayo y pensarnos ciudadanos del mundo. Hoy más bien somos personas en un mundo sin ciudadanos. Es decir, con o sin papeles, somos sujetos de gobiernos nacionales que antes llamábamos patria pero que hoy son simples bodegas para guardar las riquezas de lo que por todo el mundo se le ha robado a los de abajo y para proyectar sus simulaciones mediáticas en las cuales todos somos tratados como simples espectadores invitados a opinar quien se va y quien se queda en American Idol. Aunque hoy demandamos amnistía total para tod@s l@s ‘indocumentad@s’ en los Estados Unidos, entendemos que una solución a esta situación verdaderamente global va más al fondo. Es decir, la ciudadanía se ha convertido en una mercancía chatarra que sin embargo muchos no tenemos el dinero necesario para poder comprar. Dada esta situación, el problema del migrante no es quien es gobierno, si demócrata o republicano, si conservador o “progre.” Al contrario, los problemas que hoy enfrentan a l@s migrantes son ¿cómo ejercer el poder de decisión cuando el lugar anteriormente propio a este ejercicio (el estado-nación) existe hoy como un simple aparato de represión (mira nomás las imágenes que salieron hoy de Los Ángeles)? ¿cómo deslindar la acción política de los gobiernos cuando los gobiernos hoy día gobiernan simplemente para los de arriba? ¿cómo organizar una sociedad desde abajo y hacia abajo? y ¿cómo ser nación cuando la única nación posible—ojo, hoy en día—es la auto-determinación de tod@s l@s de abajo en su conjunto?

Si el capital y sus gobiernos han creado una incesante guerra que ha sido llamada la internacional del terror, nosotros l@s migrantes de abajo tendrémos que ir mas allá, incesantemente creando redes globales para terminar con la frontera que es hoy la mas significativa para la humanidad, la que divide a los que crean y se quedan sin nada y a los que viven de los demás y se quedan con todo.

¡Amnistía total!
Faltarán papeles, pero sobra dignidad.
