Speakers: Manuel Callahan and Mara Kaufman

at El Kilombo Intergaláctico

After a long silence, in the summer of 2005 the Zapatistas published the Sixth
Declaration of the Lacondón Jungle. The Sixth Declaration announced a new
political initiative—non-violent, massive, and radical—to effect political
change. At the national level this initiative has been called the Other Campaign,
at the international level it has centered around the notion of an "Intergalactic."
This event will look at the new Zapatista political initiative, Zapatismo more generally,
and what it means for global anti-capitalist struggle and
our own communities here in North Carolina.

Manuel Callahan will be speaking about "Zapatismo Beyond Solidarity."
Callahan is professor of Ethnic Studies at Humboldt State University. He is a long-time activist with Acción Zapatista Austin
and co-founder of Acción Zapatista Humboldt. He is also author of numerous articles on Zapatismo, Chiapas, and the
US-Mexico borderlands, including "Zapatismo and Global Struggle" (2004) and
"Zapatismo as Critical Cultural and Political Practice" (2005).

Mara Kaufman will be speaking on "The Other Campaign and US."
Mara has been traveling for the past year with the Zapatista’s Other Campaign in Mexico. She will be speaking on
the Other Campaign's innovations and the perspectives it offers for organizing our own communities here in the United States.
Mara is part of the El Kilombo collective and a graduate student in Cultural Anthropology at Duke University.
