Support Kilombo in 2018!
In this age of political, economic, and environmental crisis, multi-racial, cross-class organizing is crucial for building the ideas and practices we will need to move us beyond these problems.
For over a decade, El Kilombo has been collectively analyzing the causes of injustice in order to generate strategies for effective resistance. As a result, through our community-based projects, we are able to develop cooperative solutions to structural problems that change lives in the here and now and open a path toward a different, more just world.
Over the past year, despite the grim state of institutional politics here in the US and around the world, our projects have grown exponentially. With your support, in 2017 we were able to:
- Triple the size of our existing worker-owned cooperative and establish an entirely new cooperative. Importantly, both of our cooperatives are composed of working-class people of color and led almost entirely by women!
- Build our new workshop for education and analysis, which this year alone, offered courses on history, economics, and politics in English and Spanish, published several articles in the national and international media, held a speaker and film series, and launched its own podcast.
- Plant, harvest, and distribute 1,700 pounds of organic fruits and vegetables from our garden and 1,600 eggs from our very happy chickens.
- Add a second lawyer to our legal defense project that has offered free or low cost legal services to members of our organization and the wider community.
But we need your help to grow these projects in 2018!
How can I help?
First, you can become a monthly sustainer!. Make a tax-deductible solidarity donation on a monthly basis that allows us to cover the costs necessary to keep our projects going.
Second, you can make a one-time, tax deductible donation to raise funds toward the acquisition of a new building in Durham. When we were displaced from our community center in 2015, we temporarily moved to a nearby office. With our rapid growth over the past year, the office is absolutely bursting at the seams. We ask you to make a one-time donation that will help us to raise at least $25,000 to acquire and renovate a new space adequate to our needs.
Where do I send my donation?
Support us by making a tax-deductible donation online or by mailing a check, made out to Building From Below, to PO Box 2103, Durham, North Carolina 27702.
Thank you for supporting our work!
